I’ve just used AI to help me with my late parents’ house and asked it to reimagine the rooms so they looked better. I used this as inspiration but I only had a budget of about £500. I’ve sourced and replaced cushions in the living room, using the old ones with new covers. Here, texture and colour was key. I used a colour scheme that worked with the minty-green walls and sofas, mid-century furniture and cream stone fireplace and curtains. The new colour I introduced was burnt orange in velvet cushions that I mixed with textured cream ones. The burnt orange immediately lifted the room and looked fabulous with the minty green and the mid-century furniture! I also took an existing artwork from my Dad’s bedroom that had all of these colours and propped it on the fireplace ledge. I bought artificial plants in muted greens and ceramic tealight holders. Next I bought some big cream lamps from a local bargain store, (but you can get cheap ones from charity shops if you are lucky). For downstairs, using all the same colours in each room gave a harmonious flow as you walked around and made the house feel bigger, more airy and calmer.
I’m still working on upstairs, but the thing I have learnt the most is that plants, good lighting, harmonious colours and furnishings bring in softness. I have mostly used artificial plants as I don’t want to spend precious time looking after them (and they were a lot cheaper than buying big, real plants), but I am also using things like jam jars to hold sprigs of rosemary and other plant cuttings from the garden. (You can also use muslin or other fabric to wrap and hide an ugly vase or lamp base.) The bathroom drove me crazy because I needed to find a container in the right green for an odd sized ledge. After a week of looking at expensive reed baskets etc online, I found a container in the right green for £1.45 in my local shop and it’s perfect! It’s amazing what you can utilise with a little imagination.
It’s getting to the point where I don’t want to sell the house because I love it so much, but unfortunately I can’t afford to buy my brother’s share. Hoping we can get a good price so I can finally buy my dream home.
